Ameren Illinois has recognized OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center and other OSF HealthCare facilities for their energy reduction efforts over the past nine years by presenting them with the Ameren Illinois Energy Saving Projects Excellence and Environmental Award. The projects have lowered electric and natural gas usage, reducing OSF HealthCare’s carbon footprint, resulting in a positive impact on the environment.

Overall, the organization has saved just over 203,000 therms of gas and 6,148,950 kilowatt hours of electricity. It equates to 5,397 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions not polluting the environment. In other terms, the electricity savings amounts to 638 homes’ electricity usage for one year. The gas savings is the same as 342 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled.

Recent energy-saving projects at OSF Saint Francis include changing out fluorescent lighting to more energy efficient LED lighting, updating the burners in boilers to units that use less gas, and changing motors in pumps, fans and ventilation systems to those that run at variable frequencies allowing them to change speed based on demand.

Since 2008, OSF HealthCare has completed 143 projects to help reduce energy consumption.
