About Us
The museum was founded in 1977 and opened to the public in 1983. We’ve been growing ever since. We’ve gone from one display building to five large buildings encompassing over 30,000 square feet.
Due to prohibitive heating and cooling costs, we are open six months each year. During the six months we are closed to the public, work continues and space is made available for winter storage of vehicles whose owners want to keep them off the salty highways.
We are here to entertain and educate.
Our mission is to provide a facility where folks of all ages can see and hear and sometimes touch, items representing transportation, industry, farm and home life, as well as entertainment, from times past, mostly in the central Illinois area.
We have a multitude of exhibits, many interactive, showing life in the twentieth century.
Exhibits include: Antique and collector cars, fire trucks, airplanes, bicycles, clocks, tools, farm and Caterpillar equipment, steam locomotive and train, Grandma’s kitchen, vintage clothing, toys, dioramas, Lionel layouts, music machines and devices
Outdoor displays include:
Rock Island steam locomotive
Milwaukee Road Combine car
TP&W Caboose
Working windmill
Pullman RR cars, under restoration
Plymouth switch engine
Stationary steam engines
